Can you believe it’s already October? I absolutely love this time of year. Here in Texas, we’re finally getting a break from the heat, and I can pull out my jackets and boots. Now, do I love the cold? Not really. But dressing up for fall? Yes, please!
October is also extra special to me because it marks my anniversary as an entrepreneur. Eleven years ago, I took a leap of faith and started my own business. Let me tell you, it has been a roller coaster. There have been highs, there have been lows, but more than anything, it has been fulfilling beyond words.
Looking back, I’ve learned so much. And today, I want to share three powerful lessons that have completely shaped my journey as a service-based entrepreneur. If you’re thinking about starting a business or you’re already on the path, I hope these insights encourage and inspire you.
If I had a dollar for every time I had to trust God in this journey, I’d probably be retired by now! My sister and I were having lunch the other day, and she told me, “My faith has grown so much since starting my business.” And I just nodded because, girl, SAME.
Starting a business will test your faith like nothing else. There will be days when you don’t know where the next client is coming from. There will be moments when you’re staring at your expenses and wondering how you’ll make payroll. But through it all, I’ve learned to lean on God like never before.
I read a quote recently that said, “Faith is spelled R-I-S-K.” And that is so true. When you start a business, you take risks. You step out of your comfort zone. You walk into the unknown. But guess what? God always shows up.
One Bible verse that has carried me through is Philippians 4:6: “Do not worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.” Running a business has forced me to put this into practice daily. And let me tell you, my faith has grown in ways I never imagined.
If you’re feeling scared about taking that leap, let this be your reminder: You are not alone. Trust that God has already gone ahead of you, and He will provide everything you need along the way.
Whew, this one is big. When I first started, I had no idea how much I would grow as a person. Looking back, I can say with 100% confidence that the woman I am today is completely different from the one who started this journey eleven years ago.
Owning a business will stretch you in every way possible. You will learn how to handle difficult situations, how to work with different types of people, and how to manage expectations—from customers, employees, vendors, and even yourself.
It also teaches you responsibility. There are days when I’m exhausted, but I show up anyway because people are counting on me. I’ve learned discipline, resilience, and the ability to push through even when things get hard.
And let’s talk about courage! Just starting this blog is a testament to how much my confidence has grown. Eleven years ago, I would have been too afraid to put myself out there like this. But through the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, I’ve learned to be bold and take action, even when I don’t feel ready.
There’s a quote I love that says, “Whenever I forget that character development is part of God’s purpose for my life, I get frustrated at my circumstances.” If you’re feeling stretched right now, remember this: Every challenge is shaping you into the person you’re meant to be.
Let’s be real. Many of us start businesses because we want more freedom, more flexibility, and more financial security. And while those things are great, they are not the ultimate goal.
I’m currently reading a book called Called to Create, and it’s been such a game-changer for me. One thing that stood out is how God is the first entrepreneur. He created the world not just for Himself, but so He could have a relationship with us. In the same way, when we create businesses, it’s not just for our benefit. It’s about the impact we make on others.
When I think about my business, I see the lives that have been changed because I said YES. The customers I’ve served. The employees who have built careers. The vendors and suppliers whose businesses have grown. None of that would have happened if I had let fear hold me back.
So here’s my challenge to you: Stop thinking of your business as something just for you. It’s bigger than that. There are people waiting for what you have to offer. Your business is a vehicle for transformation, and when you step into your calling, you create opportunities for others to step into theirs.
I know starting a business can feel overwhelming. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that you don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to take the first step.
To recap, here are the three biggest lessons I’ve learned in my 11 years as a service-based entrepreneur:
My prayer for you is that you find the courage to step out in faith. That you grow in wisdom, strength, and perseverance. And that you experience the deep joy and fulfillment that comes from building something that truly matters.
