Starting a business is exciting, but let’s be real—it can also feel overwhelming. You have big dreams, a solid plan, and a whole lot of motivation. But somehow, procrastination creeps in, life gets in the way, and before you know it, months have passed without real progress. Sound familiar?
If you’ve ever found yourself stuck, unable to move forward on your business goals, you’re not alone. I recently coached a client who had been running her business for five years but struggled to complete an important goal: documenting her operational processes so she could free up time and hire help. Through our accountability coaching sessions, she not only met her goal but also taught me some powerful lessons that I want to share with you today.
If you’ve been procrastinating on launching your service-based business or executing a big business project, keep reading. These three lessons might just be the push you need to finally take action!
There’s an African proverb that says, If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. I’ve seen this truth play out time and time again with my clients.
When my client first came to me, she had tried to document her business processes on her own for years but never followed through. Why? Because when you’re the only one holding yourself accountable, it’s easy to push things off.
But when we started working together, she suddenly had a support system. It wasn’t just her anymore. She had me as her accountability coach and a trusted friend who signed an accountability agreement. She didn’t want to let either of us down. And guess what? That extra layer of accountability pushed her to take action like never before.
The takeaway? Don’t try to do everything alone. Having a mentor, coach, or even just a reliable accountability partner can make all the difference in actually achieving your business goals.
You’ve probably heard of Atomic Habits by James Clear. In it, he says, You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. And he’s absolutely right.
Setting a goal is easy. Sticking to it? That’s the hard part. Why? Because without a system in place, your goals are just wishful thinking.
For my client, her goal was clear: document 7 to 10 of her business processes in 30 days. But what really made the difference was the execution system we put in place. Each week, we had structured check-ins where I helped her break down tasks into manageable steps, assign deadlines, and troubleshoot obstacles.
By the end of our coaching sessions, she had successfully documented seven business processes—something she had struggled with for years! Why? Because she had a system, not just a goal.
The lesson here? Don’t just set a goal. Build a system that supports it. Whether it’s a structured schedule, accountability check-ins, or a step-by-step plan, having a system in place will keep you on track.
Entrepreneurs are full of ideas. So full, in fact, that jumping from one idea to the next can become a huge problem. Sound familiar?
One of the biggest struggles my clients face is shiny object syndrome. They start working on one business goal, then suddenly get distracted by a new opportunity, and before they know it, they’ve abandoned their original plan. The result? A bunch of half-finished projects and zero real progress.
That’s why my coaching method focuses on one goal at a time. My client, for example, had tons of things she wanted to improve in her business, but we zeroed in on documenting her processes. Once she completed that, she could move on to the next big thing. And because we stayed laser-focused, she actually finished what she started.
The lesson? If you want to succeed, Follow One Course Until Completion. Don’t try to tackle everything at once. Pick one goal, commit to it, and see it through before moving on to the next.
If any of these lessons hit home for you, you might be wondering: Do I need an accountability coach?
Here’s the truth: if you’ve been sitting on a business goal for months (or even years!) and haven’t made real progress, an accountability coach could be the game-changer you need.
