Coming into a new decade was super exciting for me. I observed the same sentiment across social media. So many positive posts. So many declarations. But the global excitement faded with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic. I heard about the COVID-19 outbreak in China in December 2019. I didn’t think much about it. I prayed for people affected in China.
I donated face masks through an initiative in the U.S. co-ordinating relief for people in Hunan, China. Fast forward a month later, COVID-19 became a global pandemic that shut the whole world down. The same face masks I purchased and donated, was out of stock in the U.S.
We’re all experiencing the impact of the pandemic in one way or another. I was driving back from a friend’s house a couple of weeks ago. I drove by one of my favorite movie grill theaters. The sight of an empty parking lot broke my heart. If you measure your self-worth based on your paycheck, you might be at a loss right now if you’ve lost your job. You might feel you’re not good enough if your employer laid you off. You might feel demotivated if you have to take a pay cut.
You can change the way you measure your self worth by using one important metric – value.
The value of an item speaks a lot about its price tag. The higher the price, the more valuable it is. That’s why items like Gold, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Private Jet, Diamonds, a Mansion, e.t.c. are considered valuable. Individuals that own these items call them their prized possessions.
What’s the value of life? To answer the question, let’s take a look at late Steve Jobs for a minute. Steve Jobs was the quintessential entrepreneur and innovator. He invented the world’s most used and loved electronics. His net worth was full of prized possessions.
When his Doctor diagnosed him with a terminal illness, his prized possessions couldn’t save his life. Why? because the value of life is priceless.
My mom loves to buy gold jewelry. She would always say to me and my sisters that “gold appreciates”. She has a high perception of the value of gold. When I became an adult, one of my desires was to buy my gold jewelry collection.
Everything luxurious in our world has a high price tag and as such a perceived high value in our minds. You too should have a high perception of your value because your life is priceless. No one can put a price tag on human life. You can’t pay enough to buy it, you can’t pay enough to keep it.
When you measure your life by an infinite metric, it frees you up to appreciate your worth. Whether you work for a fortune 500 company or McDonalds, remember that your life is valuable.
So much prestige and esteem are given to the rich in our society because of their net worth and impact. We often judge others based on our perception of their net worth. But, the rich and poor end up in the same place – the grave. Why esteem one above the other?
Your self-esteem shouldn’t be dependent on how much you make, what you own, who you are, or what you’ve accomplished. All these things boost our self-esteem and make us feel on top of the world but they are finite metrics. The moment we lose them, our self-esteem hits rock bottom. When you know how valuable you are, you increase your self-esteem.
I’ve learned to measure my self-worth based on an infinite metric. Something that doesn’t change in value. Something that’s not dependent on the stock market. Something priceless.
“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”
– Peter The Fisherman
Peter, a fellow entrepreneur understood the value of his life. He never measured his self-worth based on finite things. He knew his life was valued based on the high price paid for him – the blood of Jesus. The blood of Jesus is priceless. It is infinite. It is stable. It doesn’t fluctuate. It is solid.
Are you out of a job right now? Is your bank account overdrawn? You too can switch to an infinite metric for measuring your self-worth. It keeps your self-worth intact and anchored to something solid. It eliminates feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem.
Whether you work for a grocery store or a tech startup, you’re worth more than your paycheck. You’re loved with unconditional love.
You’re priceless! You’re valuable! You’re highly esteemed!
What metric have you been using to measure your self-worth? What are you doing to stay positive and motivated? I’ll love to hear from you. Please leave a comment below.
