The past month and a half for me have felt a lot like the story of Job—lots of unexpected twists, overwhelming moments, and a fair share of storms.
If you’ve been following along via email, you may already know that the last 40 days have been quite a whirlwind for me.
But, in the midst of it all, I’ve learned some valuable lessons about building a business even when life feels like it’s falling apart. If you’ve been wondering whether it’s possible to launch a service-based business while navigating personal challenges or life storms, this episode is for you.
Today, I’m going to walk you through the three key things I did (and am still doing) to keep pushing forward with my business, even when things seemed far from ideal. Trust me, if you’ve ever found yourself in a place of chaos, uncertainty, or even doubt, you’re not alone. I’m living proof that it’s possible to create, build, and thrive—even when it feels like everything else is falling apart.
Now, let’s talk about life storms. I can’t even begin to explain what the last 40 days have been like. If I were to describe it, I’d say it’s like the story of Job from the Bible. God was bragging about Job in heaven, and then, He allowed the devil to attack him — but with limits. In a similar way, the last 40 days have been a whirlwind of unexpected challenges for me. I had to transition my first service-based business from Houston, Texas, to Camden, Delaware — which is no small feat. Imagine a 24-hour drive, packing up a whole warehouse, and navigating a ton of other unexpected things along the way.
At times, it felt like I couldn’t breathe! Yet, despite the chaos, I can truly say that God was with me every step of the way.
And here’s what I realized through all of this: we can still create in the midst of our storms. Even though the environment around us feels formless, empty, and full of darkness, just like in the beginning of creation, God is still there, helping us to create — just as He did when He created the world.
So here are 3 things you can do to launch your service-based business in the midst of life storms
Let’s jump into the first thing you can do in the midst of your storms to keep moving forward with your business. Be still and acknowledge God’s presence. I can’t overemphasize how important this is. When life feels chaotic, we often disconnect from God because we think He’s the one causing the storm. But that’s simply not true. In fact, He’s right there with you, in the middle of your struggle, ready to guide you through it.
When Jesus was on earth, He said, “My peace I give to you. I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So, no matter what storm you’re facing, take a moment to pause, be still, and acknowledge that God’s presence is with you. Even in formlessness, even in confusion, He is there, helping you navigate your way. This might look like taking a few minutes to pray and say, “God, I know this storm feels overwhelming, but I trust You. I know I’m not alone in this.”
When you acknowledge His presence, you’ll find peace that surpasses all understanding. God is with you, friend. Trust in that.
The second thing I learned in the past 40 days is that we have to replace the work-life balance mindset with a priority mindset. So many of us are taught that we need balance in all areas of our lives, but honestly, that’s an illusion. Life is about prioritizing what matters most in different seasons.
I’m sure you know that your life changes depending on what’s going on. For example, if you’re raising young kids, your schedule will look different than if you have older kids or no kids at all. That said, we need to adjust our expectations to prioritize what matters most during each season of life.
Instead of chasing balance, ask yourself daily, “What is the most important thing I need to focus on right now?” Jesus showed us the importance of ruthless prioritization when He focused solely on the will of His Father, saying, “I must be about my Father’s business.” If He could set priorities with everything He had to do, surely we can do the same.
Trust me, once you start prioritizing, you’ll feel so much more focused and aligned. Ask the Holy Spirit daily what should be your focus and your priority for the day. Sometimes it’ll be your business; other times it might be family, health, or rest. But just keep asking and trusting that you’re making the right choices.
The third thing I’ve learned is to create small pockets of time to focus on one priority at a time. If you’ve been feeling like you don’t have enough time because of everything going on in your life, this tip is for you. Remember that even in the storm, God was still creating. And He did it one step at a time.
In Genesis 1, we see that God created the world in stages. He didn’t do it all in one go. The first thing He did was to create light, which represents clarity and vision. Clarity is the first thing you need to start your business too! If you don’t know what your business is or who it’s for, it’s going to be difficult to move forward.
Now, here’s where I encourage you to use the power of 15 minutes. I talked about this in episode 3, but it’s worth repeating: even if you only have 15 minutes a day, you can move the needle on your business. You don’t need hours upon hours of uninterrupted time. Use small chunks of time to focus on your business, even if it’s just thinking through one thing, writing down an idea, or taking action on one small task.
Here’s a bonus tip: when you receive divine instructions from God, move swiftly in obedience. Sometimes when we’re in the midst of life storms, we’re tempted to slow down or stop. But when you’re in partnership with God, obedience leads to breakthroughs. Trust Him and move quickly when He gives you an instruction.
For example, during my recent move from Houston to Delaware, I received divine instructions to organize a workshop, even though I felt overwhelmed. But I obeyed, and it turned out to be a powerful experience for others and for me.
So, those are the three (plus one bonus) things you can do to keep building your service-based business even in the midst of life storms. Remember:
I hope these tips have encouraged you today. You can create, even in the midst of chaos. You’ve got this, and God’s got you. Keep moving forward, and trust the process.
I can’t wait to see how you take these lessons and apply them to your own business journey. Until next time, stay blessed, stay focused, and keep going!
