If you’ve ever felt stuck, afraid, or just plain unsure about stepping into your calling, trust me, I get it. I’ve been there. And today, I want to talk about one major blocker that nearly kept me from starting my coaching business.

What Are Calling Blockers?

I first heard about the term “calling blockers” from my coach, Stephanie Gass. Simply put, calling blockers are old beliefs, fears, influences, and negative thought patterns that hold us back from stepping into what God has called us to do.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve felt the nudge to start your own business, but something is standing in your way. Maybe it’s doubt. Maybe it’s fear. Maybe it’s that nagging voice in your head that says, Who do you think you are?

I want to expose these blockers one by one, starting with the first one that nearly stopped me from launching my business.

Calling Blocker #1: My Failed Corporate Career

For the longest time, my identity was wrapped up in my corporate job. The titles, the responsibilities, the structure—it all made me feel like I had value. But when my corporate career didn’t work out the way I had planned, I felt like a complete failure.

Corporate America had told me:

• You’re not equipped for more.
• You don’t have what it takes.
• You’re not enough.

And for years, I believed it. I thought my worth was tied to that job. So when it didn’t work out, I felt like I wasn’t good enough for anything else. Can you relate?

But here’s the thing: God was calling me out of that mindset. He was calling me into something bigger—something that would impact people’s lives in a meaningful way. And I was letting an old identity hold me back.

The Power of Identity Shift

As I was struggling with this calling blocker, I started noticing something in scripture. Every time God called someone to do something great, He changed their identity first.

• Abram became Abraham.
• Sarai became Sarah.
• Jacob became Israel.
• Saul became Paul.
• Gideon—who saw himself as the weakest—was called a mighty warrior by God.

Why? Because what we believe about ourselves matters. If we’re going to step into our calling, we have to see ourselves the way God sees us, not the way society, past failures, or even our own thoughts do.

How I Overcame This Calling Blocker

I had to rewire my thinking. I went to God’s Word and started replacing lies with truth. I wrote down affirmations based on scripture. Here’s what I began telling myself:

• I am complete, adequate, and enough in Christ.
• I am equipped to step into my calling.
• I am God’s workmanship, created to do good works (Ephesians 2:10).
• I can do hard things.
• I am a valuable resource in God’s kingdom.

When I started reading these truths out loud, something shifted. I literally felt the weight of that old identity fall off my shoulders. I was no longer bound by what my corporate career had labeled me. I was free to step into what God had planned for me all along.

You are not your past mistakes. You are not your failures. You are not defined by what didn’t work out.

God has called you. And if He called you, He will equip you.
