Starting a service-based business is exciting, but it also comes with a lot of questions. One of the most common ones? “Do I need a website to start?” If you’ve been wondering about this, you’re in the right place!
Let’s talk about it in a way that’s simple and easy to understand. No fluff, just real, practical advice.
Whether or not you need a website depends on the type of service-based business you’re starting. Let’s break it down.
If your business falls under industries that require strict regulations—like healthcare, legal services, or financial consulting—having a website is a must. For example, a psych nurse practitioner starting their own business would need a website because they’re handling sensitive client information and must comply with regulations like HIPAA.
On the other hand, if you’re offering freelance services like virtual assistance, bookkeeping, or social media management, you can start without a website. Many freelancers successfully use platforms like Upwork, LinkedIn, or Instagram to get clients before ever setting up a website.
So, the first question you should ask yourself is: Does my industry require a website for legal or professional reasons? If yes, get that website up and running. If not, keep reading!
A website is great, but it’s not the only way to build your business. What matters most in the beginning is how customers can find you and contact you. Here are a few ways to start without a website:
If you’re offering services that can be booked online, platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, or Freelancer are great options. They give you access to a pool of clients already searching for your skills.
Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook—these platforms can act as your digital storefront. Your profile can showcase your work, testimonials, and even pricing. People can message you directly for inquiries, and you can start networking right away.
If you need a simple way for people to book your services, tools like Acuity Scheduling or Calendly can handle that for you. Just share the link, and clients can pick a time that works for them.
If you’re using social media but still want a central place to list your services, pricing, and contact details, consider using a bio link tool like Linktree or Stan Store. These let you create a mini website without the hassle of building one from scratch.
Even though you don’t need a website to start, it’s a great idea to build one when you’re ready. Here’s why:
Social media is great, but what if your account gets suspended or hacked? With a website, you own your content, and no one can take it away from you.
A website shows that you’re serious about your business. It can also help you attract higher-paying clients who expect a professional online presence.
You don’t need to hire an expensive developer. You can start with a simple one-page website using platforms like Wix, Squarespace, or WordPress. These tools have easy drag-and-drop features, so you don’t need tech skills to get started.
Not sure where to begin? Start with a one-page website.
A simple website should include:
Once you’re comfortable, you can expand it into a multi-page website with a blog, portfolio, and more.
Here’s the bottom line:
So, if building a website is holding you back from starting, skip it for now and focus on getting clients first. You can always add a website later when you’re ready.
Starting a service-based business doesn’t have to be complicated. If you have a skill and a way for clients to reach you, that’s enough to get started.
