Hey there! If you’ve been thinking about starting your business but just can’t seem to take that first step, you’re not alone. So many of us get stuck before we even begin, and sometimes, it feels like there’s always something standing in the way. But what if I told you that some of those obstacles aren’t real? What if I told you that some of the things holding you back are lies you’ve been telling yourself—or worse, lies you’ve been believing?
Today, I want to talk about three big lies that can keep you from launching your dream business. These are lies that might sound familiar, and you might not even realize they’re affecting you. But I’ll also share how you can overcome them with God’s Word and a little encouragement. So, let’s dive right in!
This is one of the most common lies we hear. It’s the voice in your head that says, “I don’t know enough yet” or “I’m not skilled enough.” You might look around and see other entrepreneurs who seem to have it all together, and you feel like you’re not even close. You start to wonder, “Who am I to start a business?” But let me tell you something—if you wait until you’re ‘ready,’ you might be waiting forever.
The truth is, you’re never going to feel 100% ready. There will always be things you don’t know or skills you haven’t mastered. But here’s the thing—God doesn’t call us to be perfect, He calls us to be faithful. If you’re waiting for the perfect moment, you’ll miss the opportunities God is giving you right now.
In the Bible, we see countless examples of people who didn’t feel ready but stepped out in faith anyway. Take Moses, for example. God called him to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, but Moses was convinced he wasn’t the right person for the job. He said, “I’m not eloquent” and “I’m not qualified.” But God didn’t back down. He equipped Moses for the task ahead, even though Moses didn’t feel ready.
God doesn’t need you to be fully prepared or qualified to start your business. He just needs you to take that first step, trusting that He will guide you along the way. If you’re waiting for the perfect moment to start, you’re missing the point. Trust that God will equip you as you go.
How to overcome this lie:
Instead of waiting to feel ready, take action. Start with what you have, where you are. Begin with small steps. The more you move forward, the more confident you’ll feel. And remember, God’s got you. He’ll lead you when you step out in faith.
Another big one that holds so many people back is the belief that starting a business requires a ton of money. You think, “I can’t afford the equipment, the website, the marketing—there’s no way I can start this business right now.” And while yes, starting a business may require some investment, the truth is that there are ways to get started with what you have.
Starting small doesn’t mean starting with nothing. You can begin with a minimal budget, especially if you’re resourceful and creative. And you don’t have to do everything all at once. It’s totally okay to take things one step at a time.
The Bible talks about being wise with our resources. In Luke 14:28, Jesus says, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” This doesn’t mean that you need to have everything figured out, but it does mean that you should plan and be wise about how you use your resources.
You can start your business by using low-cost or free tools, getting creative with marketing, and building your brand slowly. Many successful entrepreneurs didn’t have a ton of money to start. They used what they had and trusted that God would provide along the way.
How to overcome this lie:
Take a step back and assess your resources. What can you do with what you have right now? Maybe it’s creating a simple website, using free social media platforms, or starting your business on a smaller scale until you can afford to invest more. Don’t let the lack of money be the reason you don’t start—there are always creative ways to get things going.
This one is huge, and I know so many people who let fear of failure stop them from even trying. The “what if” monster can be so scary. What if no one buys your product? What if people don’t like your service? What if you fail completely? These fears can be paralyzing, but the truth is, failure is a part of success.
In fact, failure is often the best teacher. If you’re not willing to fail, you’re not giving yourself the chance to learn and grow. The Bible tells us that we don’t need to be afraid of failure, because God is with us every step of the way. Isaiah 41:10 says, “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Failure doesn’t define you. God does. And when you trust Him, even in your failures, He will help you get back up and keep going. Think about all the successful people you admire. They didn’t get there by avoiding failure. They got there by taking risks, making mistakes, and learning from them.
How to overcome this lie:
Shift your mindset. Instead of fearing failure, embrace it as part of the journey. When you fail, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. And remember that God is with you through it all. You’re not alone in your journey, and He will help you rise again.
Now that we’ve looked at these three lies, let’s talk about the power of overcoming them. You see, when you start to reject these lies and replace them with truth, something incredible happens: You unlock your potential. You stop letting fear, doubt, and insecurity control your actions. Instead, you begin to step into the life and business that God has planned for you.
God’s Word is full of promises to help you overcome obstacles and live out your purpose. When you believe that you are capable, equipped, and worthy of success, there’s no limit to what you can achieve. Don’t let fear or self-doubt keep you from the business you’re called to build. You’ve got this, and God’s got your back.
I know it’s not always easy to take that first step, but remember this: Your business is part of your purpose. It’s something that God has called you to do, and He’s equipped you for it. Don’t let the lies of fear, doubt, and insecurity hold you back. You are capable, you are ready, and you are worthy of success.
Take a deep breath, pray for guidance, and take that first step. You’ve got this!
