So you’ve had this idea tugging at your heart for a while now.
You’ve prayed about it, talked about it, maybe even scribbled it in a journal somewhere. But somehow, you still haven’t taken that first step to start that business. Sound familiar?
You’re not alone.
Starting something new—especially something close to your heart—can feel scary, overwhelming, and confusing. But here’s the thing: it doesn’t have to be. And that’s why I created the F.I.R.S.T. Step Method—a simple framework to help Christian women move from idea to action.
In this blog post (and throughout this series), we’ll break down each part of this method. Today, we’re starting with the very first step: F is for Find Clarity.
Let’s jump in.
Here’s the honest truth: the #1 reason most people don’t start their business is because they’re not clear. They don’t know exactly what to do next, or how to move forward. And when you’re unsure of the next step, it’s easy to do nothing at all.
Think of it like this.
Imagine standing at the top of a dark staircase. You know there are steps below, but because there’s no light, you don’t know where to place your foot. So you freeze. You wait. You tell yourself you’ll go down the stairs when the lights come on.
That’s what lack of clarity feels like. But when you find clarity, it’s like flipping the switch and lighting up the entire staircase. Suddenly, you can see all the steps. You’re no longer stuck—you’re ready to move.
Now, here’s something a lot of people get wrong. They think they need to have everything figured out—the whole plan—before they start. But that’s not true.
Let me share something powerful with you.
In the Bible, God told Abraham, “Go to the land I will show you.” That wasn’t 100% clarity. Honestly, that was more like 1%—or maybe even 0.1%! But Abraham still went.
Or think about Peter, when he saw Jesus walking on water. He said, “Lord, if it’s really you, tell me to come.” Jesus responded with one word: “Come.” That was it. Just one word. But it was enough for Peter to take the first step out of the boat.
So no—you don’t need to have the whole staircase lit. You just need enough light to take the first step.
Great question! There are three simple ways you can find clarity right now. These aren’t complicated. You don’t need a business degree or a fancy planner to do them. You just need a little time, intention, and faith.
Before you do anything, pause. Get quiet. Talk to God about the idea He’s placed in your heart.
After all, He’s the one who gave you the idea in the first place. Who better to give you clarity than the source of your inspiration?
Sometimes, we have too many ideas floating in our heads. And while they might all be great ideas, they may not all be for right now. When you spend time in prayer, you give the Holy Spirit room to help you focus on the one thing God wants you to pursue in this season.
So schedule quiet time. Turn off the noise. Grab your journal. And ask God:
And then—listen.
Write down whatever comes to your heart. You may not get a booming voice from the sky (or maybe you will!), but He’ll speak. Through His Word. Through impressions. Through people. Through peace.
Let’s talk about you for a moment.
What do you naturally gravitate towards? What are your God-given gifts and talents? What are people always asking you to help them with? What excites you? What problems do you feel deeply called to solve?
Start paying attention to your own patterns. For example, when I was exploring what kind of business to start, I noticed how much I loved helping people shop. I loved organizing things. I loved curating gifts. And without realizing it, I was already offering my services to family and friends.
So I started writing those things down.
You should do the same. Reflect on your life. Think about your strengths. Look at your career history, hobbies, and what people say you’re great at. All of that holds clues to your calling.
Then ask yourself:
Clarity comes from paying attention.
This might be my favorite tip.
If you want clarity, find someone who’s already doing what you want to do—or something similar. This person (or resource) becomes your good example.
Why does this matter? Because seeing something in action helps you believe it’s possible. A good example shows you what works, what doesn’t, and gives you a visual framework to start from.
Your good example could be:
When I was starting my personal shopping business, I found a book titled “How to Become a Personal Shopper.” That book became my blueprint.
And when I was launching this blog and my online community, I enrolled in a course called “Clarify Your Calling.” It helped me understand the online business world in a whole new way.
So go ahead. Do a quick Google search. Join a Facebook group. Ask around in your church, your workplace, or even your Instagram stories. You’d be surprised how many people are willing to help when you ask.
Ahh, the fear of competition.
Let me tell you something important: there is room for you.
Just because someone else is doing what you want to do doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Why? Because you are salt and you are light. That means you bring your own unique flavor to the world.
Think about fast food restaurants. McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A both sell food—but they do it very differently. And guess what? People still have their favorites. (For the record, I’m a Chick-fil-A girl. No shame.)
So yes, someone else might be doing something similar. But they’re not you. They don’t have your voice, your background, your stories, your heart. And that’s exactly what your audience needs.
Let’s recap everything we’ve talked about today.
To find clarity, you need to:
Remember, clarity doesn’t come all at once. It often comes as you move. Just like the lights on a staircase that only light up as you take each step—clarity increases with action.
If you’re serious about starting that business, here’s what I want you to do this week:
Let me leave you with this powerful verse:
“When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth… He will tell you about the future.” – John 16:13
God knows every single detail about the business He’s put on your heart. When you ask Him for clarity, He’ll give you just enough light to take that next step.
So friend, don’t wait for perfect clarity. Don’t wait until you have it all figured out.
Take the F.I.R.S.T. step. 🌱
You’ve got this.
