Have you been carrying this big idea in your heart—maybe even a bunch of them—but you just can’t seem to figure out which one to run with? You’re stuck in a swirl of confusion, second-guessing, and asking God, “Where do I even start?” If that’s you, friend, take a deep breath… you’re not alone.
Whether it’s a coaching business or any kind of service-based business, finding clarity can feel like trying to put together a puzzle with no picture on the box. But today, let’s walk through this together. We’re going to talk about how to go from “I don’t know what to do” to “Okay, I know exactly what my next step is.”
So if you’ve been stuck in idea overload or feel unsure about what God wants you to focus on, let’s walk through a process that can help you finally get clear.
Yep, it might sound simple… but it’s powerful. The first step to finding clarity isn’t buying another course or making a vision board—it’s prayer.
Why?
Because the business you’re trying to build is not just any business. It’s a Kingdom business. It’s a calling. It’s something God has placed on your heart for a reason. And if He gave you the vision, then He’s got the strategy too.
Think about it this way—God has already prepared the work for you. It says so in Scripture: “the good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10). That means your business isn’t random. It’s part of the bigger story.
So take your ideas to Him in prayer. Don’t hold back. Be specific:
And here’s the thing: God is not the author of confusion. The opposite of confusion is clarity—so if you’re confused, you can trust that God wants to bring clarity to you.
Let’s be real: Sometimes you pray, and you don’t get the full picture immediately. That doesn’t mean you didn’t hear from God—it just means He may be unfolding things little by little.
Think about Noah. When God told him to build the ark, He gave him all the details—measurements, materials, everything. Noah got the whole blueprint up front.
But then there’s Abraham. God told him, “Go to the land I will show you.” No details. Just go.
And then there’s Joseph. He had a dream, but the full plan? That came piece by piece over the years.
So if you only have a small piece of the vision right now, that’s okay. Start with what you’ve got. Obedience in the small things leads to clarity for the bigger steps.
Some people will tell you that asking God for a sign means you lack faith. But let’s flip that idea.
In the Bible, Gideon asked for a sign. Moses did too. Even Abraham asked for confirmation. These are people listed in the “Hall of Faith” in Hebrews. Clearly, God doesn’t mind when we ask for guidance.
God is a loving Father, and He wants to collaborate with you. He wants you to walk in the right direction. So if asking for a sign helps you move forward in obedience—ask for one! You’re not annoying God. You’re inviting Him into the process.
Isaiah 7:11 even says, “Ask the Lord your God for a sign of confirmation…” So go ahead. Be bold. Ask.
And when the confirmation comes—move. Don’t sit on it. Don’t overthink it. Take the next step.
Remember, prayer is a conversation. After you pour your heart out, take time to listen.
Sometimes God answers through your thoughts. Sometimes it’s through a dream. Other times it’s a conversation you overhear, a sermon you listen to, or even a message on a billboard while you’re driving.
Be on the lookout. Pay attention to the little nudges. And when something speaks to you, write it down. Keep a journal or even just a note on your phone. You’ll be surprised how clearly God can speak when you’re actually paying attention.
Once you’ve prayed and gotten some direction (even just a little), it’s time to sit down and brainstorm.
This is where you start sorting through all your ideas with questions like:
Let’s break these down a bit.
You may not realize it, but the answer might already be hiding in your past experiences. Maybe people have been calling you all year long to “pick your brain.” Maybe you’ve been unofficially helping friends with something for free.
That was the case for me. Before I officially launched my coaching business, I noticed that people were constantly calling me for business advice. They saw me as someone who had answers. That was a big clue that coaching was already in motion—I just hadn’t packaged it yet.
This one’s huge. So many of us want to start big. We want the website, the brand photos, the full course, the fancy funnels.
But let me tell you… the biggest trees start as seeds.
Don’t despise small beginnings. You can absolutely start with a scrappy version of your business. That’s exactly what I did.
All I did was type up a short message on my phone and sent it to a few women who had asked me business questions throughout the year. I said something like, “Hey, I’m offering coaching for a short period. These are the areas I can help with. Let me know if you’re interested.”
That’s it.
Four women signed up. Paid.
I had no curriculum. No fancy setup. I just obeyed—and God met me there.
That small act turned into the coaching program I run today. It started tiny, but it was real. And it worked.
If you’re still stuck after all this, I highly recommend brainstorming with a coach. A lot of coaches offer something called a “Power Hour,” which is just a focused, one-hour session where you bring your ideas, and the coach helps you sort them out.
When I was starting my podcast, I had tons of ideas but no clear focus. I booked a one-hour session with my podcast coach, and by the end of it, I had clarity. She helped me sift through the noise and land on one clear direction.
Sometimes all it takes is a fresh perspective.
Here’s what I want you to take away from all this:
Clarity is not some magical lightning bolt. It’s a process. It’s a mix of prayer, obedience, action, and a whole lot of trust.
You don’t have to figure everything out today. But you do need to take a step.
So here’s your challenge:
Remember, you’re not alone in this. God is with you, cheering you on. He gave you the idea. He’ll give you the clarity. And He’ll go with you every step of the way.
You’ve got this, friend.
