In 2016, I enrolled in a coding Bootcamp to learn how to code. As a newbie in web development, I felt the tension and feeling of superiority in my school. The tension was between the experienced developers and the newbies.
It’s the feeling you feel when you sign up for your first CrossFit session. You show up and everyone seems to be lifting more weight than you and making it look like a piece of cake. They flaunt their six packs and show off their strength and stamina. They finish their workout reps on time. You drag along hoping to make it to the end of the session without passing out.
Who looks out for the new entrepreneur overwhelmed by the thought of starting a business? Who takes time to explain concepts in many ways so the not-so-obvious becomes obvious? Who takes the new entrepreneur by hand and shows them the resources to focus on?
Here are some encouraging thoughts for new entrepreneurs out there.
You achieve mastery of any skill or activity through consistent practice. Don’t let your lack of experience discourage you. Stay on the grind! Spend a meaningful amount of time developing your business skills daily. Spend time growing your business. Keep learning, keep practicing, and keep improving. No entrepreneur has it all figured out even experienced entrepreneurs.
It takes a lot of time to build a profitable and successful business that runs like clockwork. Take it easy, it’s a process. Stop comparing your progress with other businesses or other entrepreneurs. It took years of consistent focused work to build what you see in other businesses. Be patient! Commit to the process, show up every day and you’ll see the desired results.
Failure is the pathway to success. Embrace failure! Give yourself permission to experiment, fail, learn and improve. You might feel like giving up and walking away when the business is struggling. Keep at it, even when you don’t feel like it. You’ll need grit for your marathon journey. There will be days when you question why you started the business in the first place. Don’t worry, you’re not crazy. You’re normal. Unless you’re convinced it’s time to pivot or move to something else, find a way to keep moving.
When you finally become an established entrepreneur making 6 or 7 figures, remember you were once a newbie and pay it forward. Don’t become a know it all, do-it-all, I am better than you entrepreneur. Find a new entrepreneur you can mentor and train to become established like you. The world is so much better when we share our knowledge.
So next time you feel like the only human in a world full of robots, remember that I am human too and we’re in this together. Don’t let where you are on your entrepreneurial journey discourage you. Keep taking small consistent actions! Continue to experiment, fail, learn, and improve. You’re on your way!
Congratulations to all aspiring entrepreneurs reading this post. I applaud your courage to move from dreaming to taking action to start your business. I know it can be overwhelming or discouraging at the beginning. But you’re not alone. What discourages you the most from starting that business? I’ll love to hear from you.
