So, you’ve been thinking about starting a service-based business, but you’re stuck. You have the passion, you feel the pull, but clarity? Not so much.
Maybe you’re feeling overwhelmed by all the information out there, unsure about the right steps to take, or even battling self-doubt. And let’s be real, scrolling through Instagram and seeing everyone else seemingly thriving in their businesses can make you feel like you’re behind.
But here’s the thing—you’re not behind. You’re just at the beginning of your journey, and that’s exciting! The key is to take imperfect action, step out in faith, and start. Today, I want to help you get clear on the two main types of service-based businesses you can start.
Let’s break it down.
Service-based businesses fall into two broad categories:
Let’s go deeper into each one so you can see which category your business idea falls into!
A DFY service business means exactly what it sounds like: you provide a service where your client doesn’t have to do any of the work. They hire you to take care of everything, and you deliver the results.
Basically, if you’re providing a service where you take care of everything for your client, it’s a DFY business.
If you answered yes to any of the above, a DFY business might be the perfect fit for you.
Let’s say you’re a graphic designer. If someone hires you to create a logo, branding materials, or social media graphics, they are paying you to do all the work. They aren’t designing anything—you’re delivering a final, polished product. That’s a DFY business!
A DWY service business, on the other hand, is more collaborative. Instead of doing all the work, you guide your client through a process, working with them to achieve the final result.
These businesses are more hands-on in terms of working with your client rather than just delivering a finished product.
If that sounds like you, then a DWY service-based business could be the best option!
Let’s say you’re a business coach. Instead of creating a business for someone, you work with them, helping them develop strategies, build confidence, and implement action steps. You’re actively involved in the process, but the client is also doing the work.
Still not sure? Here’s a quick way to decide:
For example, a social media strategist could offer DFY services (managing accounts for clients) and DWY services (coaching clients on how to manage their own social media).
You don’t want to look back years from now and regret not taking action. If you’re ready to start your service-based business but still feel unsure about your direction, I have something for you—my Business Clarity Blueprint.
If you’re feeling stuck, this guide will help you break through the fog and move forward with confidence!
Starting a service-based business doesn’t have to be complicated. The key is to just start. Whether you choose a DFY business where you do all the work or a DWY business where you work with your clients, there is room for you to succeed.
