Priceless value isn’t just a poetic idea—it’s a powerful truth that can transform how you see yourself and your self-worth, especially in uncertain times.
Entering a new decade felt incredibly exciting for me. I noticed the same joy and anticipation across social media—so many positive posts, bold declarations, and hopeful outlooks. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, that excitement quickly faded around the world.
I first heard about the outbreak in China in December 2019. At the time, I didn’t give it much thought. I simply prayed for those affected. A few weeks later, I joined a U.S.-based initiative that sent face masks to Hunan, China. Ironically, those same masks became impossible to find here shortly after. Everything shifted—quickly and dramatically.
Since then, we’ve all experienced the effects of the pandemic in some form. A few weeks ago, I passed by one of my favorite movie grill theaters. When I saw the empty parking lot, it hit me like a gut punch. In that moment, I thought about how many people had wrapped their identity—and their self-worth—around jobs they no longer had. If you measure your self-worth by your paycheck, then losing that paycheck can feel devastating.
Fortunately, there’s good news: your self-worth doesn’t depend on your job or income. You are valuable because of who you are, not what you do.
In most cases, the price of something reflects its perceived value. That’s why people view luxury items like gold, Ferraris, and private jets as valuable.
But let’s take a step back and ask a deeper question: What is the true value of a human life?
Think about Steve Jobs. He achieved massive success, pioneered beloved technology, and built an iconic brand. His net worth reflected a lifetime of hard work. Yet when doctors diagnosed him with a terminal illness, all that wealth couldn’t save him. That moment revealed a sobering truth: life itself holds priceless value.
When I was growing up, my mom often reminded my sisters and me, “Gold appreciates.” She didn’t just say it—she lived it. She believed in gold’s lasting value and invested in it consistently. Inspired by her, I also began building my own collection of gold jewelry. To me, gold came to symbolize value that endures over time.
Similarly, you must see your self-worth as timeless and unshakable. Just like gold, your life holds immeasurable value. No one can put a price tag on it. You don’t have to earn it, and you can’t lose it.
Once you start measuring your worth using an eternal standard—one that doesn’t rise or fall with circumstances—you begin to walk in a confidence that lasts.
In today’s world, people often admire wealth, status, and public influence. These external markers seem to represent value. Yet in the end, every person—rich or poor—faces the same reality: death. So, why do we esteem one life above another?
True self-esteem must come from something deeper than fame or fortune. When your identity is tied to fleeting titles and trends, your confidence will always feel fragile. However, when you anchor your worth in something unchanging, you give your self-esteem a strong foundation.
Over the years, I’ve learned to root my self-worth in something no one can take from me. Not the economy. Not social trends. Not even my own fears or failures.
“For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”
— 1 Peter 1:18–19
Peter, who worked as a fisherman and became a leader in the early Church, understood that his value wasn’t based on status or possessions. He saw himself through the lens of an eternal price—the blood of Jesus. That price never fluctuates. It speaks of worth that cannot be diminished.
So if you’re in a season of job loss, financial strain, or emotional burnout, let this truth sink in: your self-worth remains intact. When you measure yourself by what’s eternal, you won’t be shaken by what’s temporary.
Whether you’re running a company, raising kids, or looking for your next opportunity, you are loved. You are valuable. You are enough.
Your self-worth is not for sale.
