I’m so excited you’re reading blog post #2. In blog post #1, I wrote about “3 Limiting Beliefs you need to overcome to start your business“. To recap, limiting beliefs are negative stories we tell ourselves in our minds. Stories like “I don’t have what it takes to run a business” or “I’m always sidelined for a promotion because of my gender” or “I’m too old to get a job” e.t.c. Sound familiar?

In December 2017, I heard about the concept of “Liberating Truths” from my role model Michael Hyatt. Liberating Truths are positive stories or narratives we tell ourselves in our minds. Stories like “I have what it takes to run a business” or “My expertise sets me apart for a promotion” or “I’m not too old to get a job because my experience is valuable to my future employer” e.t.c.

Your belief system whether good or bad controls your will, your actions, and the results you produce in every area of your life. You can overcome limiting beliefs by replacing them with liberating truths.

In 2011, I set a goal to start an international personal shopper business. I embraced these 3 liberating truths to overcome my limiting beliefs and start my business.

Liberating Truth #1

“My success and fulfillment in life is not determined by a corporate job.”

I believed the lie for a long time that my success and fulfillment could only come from a corporate job. All my attempts to get a corporate job left me devastated, rejected and disappointed.

In 2012, I decided to change the story I was telling myself. I embraced this liberating truth, picked up the pieces of my life and launched my international personal shopper business. I was 8months pregnant with my daughter when I launched.

This liberating truth keeps me going when the “Fear Of Missing Out” on the corporate world tries to creep in again. Your success and fulfillment in life can come from the places you least expect. Keep an open mind! You’re worth more than a Corporate Job!

Liberating Truth #2

“As unique as my fingerprint, so are the ideas, businesses, content, and work I create and put out in the world.”

“Everyone is already doing what I want to do, so what’s the point”. I used to say that to myself whenever I thought of starting a business. I realized I wasn’t the only one with that limiting belief. My role model Michael Hyatt had the same limiting belief. But, my mental freedom came when I heard him share liberating truth #2.

I’ve adopted his liberating truth as mine to help me overcome the same limiting belief. I take it like a pill whenever negative thoughts try to diminish my worth and the uniqueness of the things I produce and put out in the world. Even twins born on the same day have unique personalities no matter how much they dress alike.

Whenever you feel you have nothing to add to the conversation going on online or in any area of business, always remember that “As unique as your fingerprint, so are the ideas, businesses, content, and work you create and put out in the world.” You’re a Masterpiece!

Liberating Truth #3

“Someone hires the services I offer to get a job done! It doesn’t have to be rocket science.”

After I launched my service business in 2011, I felt my service wasn’t valuable because it wasn’t rocket science. My service didn’t provide a cure for a deadly disease. I told myself this story for a long time until I had a paradigm shift encounter with an existing customer. I later read the book “Jobs to be Done” by Stephen Wunker, Jessica Wattman and David Farber and it all came together.

“Jobs to be Done” is a concept that says your prospective customer hires the product or service you offer to get a job done. Whenever you pull up to “Chick Fil A” to buy a chicken sandwich, it’s because you need to satisfy your hunger (i.e. Your “Job to be Done”). So you hire a Chick Fil A Chicken Sandwich to get the job of satisfying your hunger done. Make sense?

Internalizing this concept helped me see the services I offer as valuable. It helped me overcome the negative story that “the services I offer isn’t valuable because it’s not rocket science”. Everyone that hires your product or service has a job they need it to do. Your service offering doesn’t have to be rocket science.

It can be as simple as satisfying someone’s hunger, or need to get quality products, or need to learn how to use instagram, or need to get organized, or need to get knowledge in a certain area. Stop looking down on the service you offer or you plan to offer. Whatever your business idea or side hustle, if it fulfills a need for someone, it is a valuable!

You Become What You Practice!

Every belief whether good or bad is a story playing in your mind. You have the power to change the story you’re telling yourself. Why not change it to a story that is positive, energizing, and encouraging? Tell yourself a story that serves your purpose and gives you the boost you need to achieve your goals.

Overcoming limiting beliefs with liberating truths is a life long endeavor. As you overcome limiting beliefs in one area of your life, they show up in other areas. Identify the negative stories you’re telling yourself in every area of your life and write a new empowering story. Whenever the old story finds it’s way back, swap it out with your new empowering story. Make this a daily practice.

Every new year, I take stock of the limiting beliefs looming in my mind and I write a new empowering story. I go the extra mile to record the new liberating truth on my phone and listen to it often. This keeps me armed with the right story to overcome my limiting beliefs. Create liberating truths for the major goals you want to achieve in 2020 and review them whenever you review your goals. You become what you practice!
